Gender: Female
Age: 50
Time Period: Immediately after Chapter 10: Turning the Tides of Book One.
Wing Color: Dark grey with dull golden edges.
History: Wiki link!
Personality:
Outwardly, Lin is as tough and cold as the metal she bends (or, uh, previously bended). She's straight-forward and no-nonsense. She scowls a lot, is hard to impress, is abrasive and uncompromising. As the Chief of the Metalbending Police, she refused to bend the law for anyone (even the Avatar). She considers the law very, very important and the stability and safety of her city even more so. In fact, she's broken the former in the name of the latter, and while Lin is very much unbudging on the rules normally, she isn't against working outside of those laws if it means protecting Republic City.

Lin can come off as very cold-- outside of coldness the other emotion she tends to display is abrasiveness. It's true, Lin is not a very soft or friendly person. She's hard to get close to and hard to 'win over' as far as trust goes. Some people mistake this as being a bitter old lady, which while not entirely untrue is still mostly untrue. Even as a child, Lin wasn't the most friendly or sweet-tempered or affectionate of children, and the lack of those traits became more pronounced with age.

But she isn't entirely stone-hearted-- when she does care about someone or something, she dumps her heart into it. It's why she's so protective of her city, why (so many years ago) she was so hurt when Tenzin took up with Pema, why she was willing to break laws to free her officers from Amon and the Equalists. When she's loyal to something or someone, she's fiercely loyal.

Daughter of, arguably, the best earthbender ever, the woman who created metalbending and the metalbending police force, Lin has always been determined to do her best and try her hardest. The Bei Fong reputation may not have a long history, but it's a reputation that Lin spent many years wanting nothing more than to uphold. When she was younger (much younger), she was absolutely convinced that it was her solemn duty to prove that she could be as amazing as her mother. This has dissipated a lot over the years (though it's hard to forget that her mother has a gold statue right outside the police headquarters and Lin had to walk past it everyday for many, many years) and Lin has become far more focused on just protecting Republic City as well as she possibly can.

She never realized how much she relied on her earth and metalbending until just recently (ten minutes ago, recently) when she lost those abilities. Lin's life was built around being able to fly around on metal cables (or grab people / things with metal cables), to throw rocks around or throw up a rocky shield, to stomp a bare foot on the ground and "see" everything around and under her feet. Without those abilities, Lin lost a huge chunk of herself. She feels helpless, something she is not fond of. There are few instances in Lin's life where she's felt truly vulnerable, an easy target, useless and unable to handle herself. And while Lin refuses to be entirely helpless, because Lin is very die-hard and a survivor, she feels far weaker than she ever has before.

Strengths:
physical: For a woman her age (or for anyone), Lin is both surprisingly flexible and surprisingly quick. As a part of the metalbending police force (and for more than several years, Chief of said police force) Lin has kept in shape (enough so that she can swing around on her metal cables and proceed to put up a damn good fight against Equalist punks). As an earthbender, Lin is naturally strong (able to lift boulders into the air, able to literally bend and move metal, able kick a lot of ass). However, she is no long an earthbender, which means she is not nearly as strong as she was previously.

mental: Lin has never been a stupid woman, but she's less "clever" or smart than she is capable. She's never been particualrly academic or fond of books, being one who cared more for 'practical' knowledge. She's a quick thinker, able to make quick decisions and do so while under pressure. She's very focused person.

emotional: Tough physically, Lin is also tough when it comes to her emotions. Lin is not prone to tears or theatrics, she's a collected person. Part of it is that she doesn't allow herself to succumb to things such as fear. And in general, Lin is not a fearful person. She was the Chief of a police force that swings around on metal cables and fights people who can throw fire, she's not exactly unaccustomed to what would be considered as frightening situations.

Weaknesses:
physical: While Lin is certainly in good shape for her age, she's still 50 years old and can't take a beating like she used to. Age has taken it's toll and she's not near as spry as she was twenty or even ten years ago. A lot of her physical strength relied on her ability to earthbend, however, and as did the majority of her fighting and defensive skills. Minus earthbending, she's just a 50-year-old woman in good shape who, while still no doubt able to give a good punch, is far weaker than she is used to.

mental: Lin is street-smart, but she isn't book smart nor has she ever been one to work in with theoretical things, or bother with things that she deems irrelevant. She's very, very much set in her ways and quite unwilling to deal with "funny business"-- she's been termed as "challenging", which is absolutely true. While she's not too proud to admit when she's wrong usually, there are far more cases where she insists that her way is the only way, and is very hard to convince into budging away from that.

emotional: Lin's "tough" emotional exterior has, in the past, come to bite her in the ass. Lin is a fairly prideful woman, and someone who is fairly used to being atop the boulder, so to speak. Such as believing that her and her police force could protect the pro-bending arena after Amon threatened it, basically giving the man a "come at me, bro" without even considering that that was exactly what Amon wanted. She can be temperamental, however, and does not hide her displeasure with people. She's abrasive and brutal and has a tendency to seem very harsh, which makes her a hard person to become close with.

other: Lin also does not do well in situations she's not used to-- such as babysitting (or "babybending"). Lin has very little experience with children, she's never spent much time trying to understand them, has long let go of the idea of having children (which she was never very for in the first place). She sees them as fragile little crying things, honestly, and they put her in a very awkward place.

Samples
First Person: Not quite sure this meets the minimum sentence requirements, so if not you can throw me a Q&A!
[ the first page of the book isn't an explanation, which makes the book pretty useless. nevertheless, she hits a few buttons, just to figure out what the hell they do, including the voice function. ] --useless piece of trash, is what this is, I don't-- [ a rustling noise, inaudible muttering, then a pause ] What is this thing doing-- [ silence, then quietly: ] Oh, it's--

[ more mutterings, then a cough, before speaking in a more authoritative and threatening tone ] Whatever joke this is, whatever is going on, whoever is responsible for these-- these shenanigans, I will find you and I will-- [ a pause ] -- and you will regret it, because I will-- [ pause, fumbling for words ] -- I don't need to bend to make you regret this! I'm the Chief of-- former Chief of Republic City's Metalbending Police Force, and I will find a way to make you regret this.

[ silence, some inaudible mumbling ] Why do I have wings? That's just-- never mind, it doesn't matter. [ a pause ] How do you turn this thing off? [ button mashing, finally hitting the stop button ]
Third Person: Sample thread written with the Ikki applicant/Lucy, because we're... overachievers like that? In case you don't want to read ALL THAT, here's a chunk:
Lin was the very opposite of chipper. She felt like she'd been electrocuted and then had her bending ripped away while the rain had poured down over her-- oh wait, that was exactly what had just happened. She had no idea where she was or what was going on-- two things that were absolutely infuriating-- and no clue how she'd gotten into this situation. The last thing she remembered was Amon's hand on her head and the sensation of-- she couldn't describe it, the thought just make her stomach roll.

And then she was somewhere that was certainly not Air Temple Island or even Republic City, nor any other place Lin had ever seen. And she had on a sundress. And had wings (what). She'd fallen unconscious and woke up in a madland. She ruled out a delusion, admittedly with some lack of sureness. It was entirely possible that the loss of her bending had caused a loss of sanity, but she liked to think that she was mentally stronger than that, able to bend or no.

Plus, a delusion of Lin's would never be anything like this.

It didn't make much sense for Amon, either, which ruled it out as his doing. He left his victims behind, vanishing into the shadows, like the monster (the cowardly monster, Lin thought) he was. He didn't give them wings and dress them in sundresses (because that was just outright crazy).

Mentally listing what needed to be done (1. find out where she was; 2. find out how she had gotten her; 3. find a way out and home; 4. punch Amon in his stupid masked face, lack of bending be damned) Lin had stood and walked away from where she'd awoken, surveying her surroundings with narrowed eyes as she did. She held her journal in one hand, annoyed that it's first page hadn't been "THIS IS WHAT IS GOING ON AND HOW TO GET HOME", not that she had expected as much.

It was while walking and surveying that she had heard a familiar laugh. It was only this afternoon that she had stayed on Air Temple Island to look after Tenzin's family, though it felt like it was years ago after everything that had happened.

Seeing Tenzin's second eldest child splashing water all over people from inside a fountain, Lin's first instinct was to thrust out her arm and use her metal cables to grab the seven-year-old and pull her over to her. She felt quite foolish after that, since a) she didn't have her cables on her and b) she couldn't bend. With a deep breath, Lin walked toward the fountain, grabbing the girl by the scruff of her shirt and hauling her from the water.

"What are you doing?" It came out harsher than she meant, but Lin was tired and sore and on edge.
