one airship ripped. [ VOICE ]
[ After waking up in the grass (what), shaking out her hair and trying to gather her bearings, she flips open the journal. The first page of the book isn't an explanation, which is annoying. Nevertheless, she hits a few buttons, just to figure out what the hell they do, including the voice function, all while muttering to herself. ] --useless piece of trash, is what this is, I don't-- [ pause for staring ] What is this thing doing-- [ silence, then quietly: ] Oh, it's--
[ She straightens where she's sitting on the ground and speaks deliberately: ] Whatever joke this is, whatever is going on, whoever is responsible for these-- these shenanigans, I will find you and I will-- [ a pause. I can't earthbend their faces into the ground. ] -- and you will regret it, because I will-- [ pause, fumbling for words ] -- I don't need to bend to make you regret this! I'm the Chief of-- former Chief of Republic City's Metalbending Police Force, and I will find a way to make you regret this.
[ She shuts up, finally realizing the wings on her back. What. ] Why do I have wings? That's just-- never mind, it doesn't matter. [ a pause ] How do you turn this thing off? [ More glaring, more button mashing, finally just hits it against the ground to shut it off. ]

Have fun trying to arrest the culprits, babe. A good friend of mine has been trying that for several months now, with no luck.
Welcome to Luceti--and don't mind the wings. They're annoying, but you're kiiiinda stuck with them.

--"I don't need to bend to make you regret this!"
She takes a breath. To be without your bending is horrible enough. To wake up in a strange place with wings on your back is also horrible enough. Her heart goes out to the woman even if...
...well, she wasn't expecting Toph's daughter to show up and be older than all of them!
She's immediately concerned for her friend too, but - first things first.]
There's a lot to explain. [Whether or not her voice sounds familiar is debatable, but there's a certain Tone Katara has when she is about to get everyone to Calm Down so they can Do Something and it's certainly in effect now.] And I don't know of any way to make it any easier than how impossible it is to believe. But my name is Katara, I'm from the Southern Water Tribe and... if you are who I think you are, then I owe you my thanks.

"Lin's great-er-est! She's Chief of the Metalbending Police!"
Her stomach twists. Her throat contracts. She gasps and drops the journal. Was this...was she...the daughter Ikki had mentioned?
Her daughter? Here? They brought her here?
No, that couldn't be right. She was just jumping to conclusions. It could be some other person who'd been Chief of the police force. But Ikki had made it sound like Lin had directly succeeded Toph herself, and the odds...what were the odds?
An unfamiliar feeling bubbles in her heart and she feels like dropping the journal and just running. Outside, somewhere. Running away from something she wasn't ready to face. But that would be cowardice and she's anything but a coward.
But she doesn't know what to do. She doesn't know what to say, and her skin is starting to prickle. What if Toph isn't the way Lin remembers her? She undoubtedly would have changed as an adult if she ever became settled enough to have family. What if she's estranged, like Toph was to her own parents? What if they'd disagreed, or what if they loved each other so much that meeting Toph like this would be too weird? Or maybe she's wrong and this isn't the person she thinks it is. But she doesn't have the feeling that's the case.
...Wait, why doesn't she need to bend? Why was she the former Chief of Metalbending Police? Ikki hadn't mentioned that. Just that she'd saved them and--
She can't forget to breathe. Breathe.
But what could she even say? Maybe it would be better...not to say anything at all yet. Let Katara take the reigns until...until things could be explained and Toph could figure out what it even is she's supposed to be feeling right now.
But this is family. She can't just ignore it. It'll gnaw and poke at her until she does something. The uncertainty seizing her at this moment is nearly unbearable. So. Here goes nothing.]
...You're Lin Bei Fong...aren't you?
[What happened to your bending?]

BUT WHAT IS LIFE IF YOU DON'T LIVE IT DANGEROUSLY]
So I'm not the only one who just showed up here with no explanation, then? I really can't say whether that's reassuring or not.

[Chief of a city law enforcement. She likes you already.]
[Voice]
[He has to hold back a light chuckle at that. A chuckle that might can still be heard through the journal.]
...sorry. [He just... what even.] Normally I would give you the usual welcome, but hopefully you're getting your questions answered already?
